Let's thank the bees!

If you have eaten today then you need to give bees a big thank you. Around a third of your meal would not have been possible without bees as pollinators. Wild and domestic honey bees do around 80% of all pollination worldwide and 70 out of the top 100 food crops for humans are pollinated by bees.

Honey bees around the world are facing devastating collapses of their colonies and populations. This is due to a variety of intersecting issues including pesticides, droughts, air pollution, habitat destruction, and climate change. Of these causes, humans are responsible for the most prominent causes of honey bee deaths: pesticide usage and habitat loss.

Without honey bees, our grocery stores would be practically empty and your farm share would be too. Without bees we wouldn’t have any of the following:

  • Tree fruits (apples, peaches, oranges, etc)

  • Bananas

  • Melons

  • Berries (Strawberries, blueberries, etc)

  • Cucumbers

  • Onions

  • Pumpkins (Halloween would not be as festive!)

  • Coffee

  • Vanilla

  • Tomatoes

  • Grapes

  • Chocolate

  • Broccoli

And so much more!

It is about time we thank the bees for all they do for us. As a thank you, we need to support and save their populations. To support bee populations,

  1. Invest in and support organic farmers and farmers that utilize less and non-dangerous and non-bee killing pesticides. Corbin Hill only partners with farms that utilize few pesticides as well as organic farms.

  2. Preserve bee habitats. Oppose destruction of and construction in forests and other natural spaces. Encourage your community to plant a bee friendly garden with native plants and wildflowers.

  3. Call, write, and urge our government officials and Congress to pass the Saving America’s Pollinators Act as well as protect the Endangered Species Act

In celebration of bees, sign up today to get your local honey in your Farm Share next week!
